Buffy fish owl feeding unusual food item to juvenile

on 4th April 2024

On 27 Mar 2024, close to 6.30pm, I observed a family of 3 Buffy fish owls (Ketupa ketupu) on a tree branch at Pasir Ris Park.

Photo 1: There was a pair of adult owls and a juvenile that had fledged about two days.
Photo 2: The male adult owl suddenly took off and flew to a big tree branch which had a large Bird-nest fern on it. The owl seemed to have found something on the branch.
Photo 3: The owl had retrieved something that looked like a short twig between its beak.
Photo 4: This photo shows the food item from another view point. But I can’t identify the food item. It would be interesting if someone could provide insight on this unusual food item.
Photo 5: The male adult owl flew back to its family and fed the unusual food item to its juvenile.
Photo 6: This photo shows the male adult owl in a nice pose. This owl that seemed like a passive partner in raising the owlet was finally observed to be active in feeding the owlet with a strange food source.
