White-throated Kingfisher – Orb Spider prey

posted in: Feeding-invertebrates, Kingfishers | 0

“White-throated Kingfishers (Halcyon smyrnensis perpulchra) are common in urban and semi-urban environments. Rarely do I see one in primary jungle.

“This immature bird had possibly followed a ‘broken’ trail 1.5 km into the forest.

“I came across it with a large Golden Orb-Web Spider prey (Nephila species Spider). It was branch swiping the prey and as I got closer, it possibly decided I was after its breakfast and took off. The bird did not look well nourished.”
