White-tailed Robin – Immature feeding and adult’s calls

on 22nd June 2013

“I saw four different juveniles/immature White-tailed Robin (Myiomela leucura leucura) during this visit in late March. Two males and two females, and all were feeding independently. In addition one bird was collecting nesting material. This supports available literature, that part of the breeding season (possibly the peak) is February-May (see Wells 2007).

“Prey for the species is not well recorded. I managed a short handheld video (with its problems of shake and focus) (above) of one feeding episode by an immature male (top).

“It was foraging, as is typical, in the forest leaf litter, turning over and stirring up leaves to identify prey. It caught a long green worm, which it took some time to subdue by swiping it on the ground and a rock before feeding.

“The recording HERE is of the “classical” calls for the bird. Can be mistaken for a niltava. Note in the first two calls in the recoding these is a response intermingled.”
