The Hammerhead worm belongs to the Phylum Platyhelminthes, the flatworms. The flatworms have flat bodies to increase the surface area-volume ratio for oxygen exchange as they are characterised by the absence of respiratory and circulatory systems. The digestive system is simple with only one opening that functions as oral and anal opening. Hence, food is digested externally with the help of outpoured enzymes and the prey’s juices are then sucked into the digestive system.
These organisms possess very high regenerative capabilities and some planarian species are popular as study subjects in the field of body regeneration. Platyhelminthes include the parasitic types like tapeworms and flukes and the non-parasitic free-living types called planarians. Planarians belong to Class Turbellaria and can be found in fresh water, salt water and terrestrial habitats. The marine flatworms are enchanting creatures as they are adorned in bright colours. The free-living worms are predatory.
The Hammerhead worm is a very vicious and efficient hunter of earthworms and snails. View the videos below to appreciate their hunting techniques and to understand why empty snail shells are sometimes seen near these worms.
