“There is this Little Heron (Butorides striata) who lives in my urban neighbourhood and occasionally visits my garden. Was out for a short walk in the neighbourhood and it was very agreeable to being approached. My wife and I watched it make a number of short calls. It would arc its neck upward and let out a short gurgle like noise “urk” (above left).
“It was late in the evening (6.30pm) so lighting was limited.

I wonder what the purpose of the vocalization was. If this was recently, I assume it’s not related to breeding and territory – or was it?
