Long-tailed Shrike – juveniles and adults

“I saw a pair of adults Long-tailed Shrikes (Lanius schach schach) with two juveniles. One juveniles was more mature and self-feeding (above), the other still being fed by parents (below). Both still had a gape, a less developed face mask, rufous-buff edging to the wing feathers; the younger one had a shorter tail. The self-feeding juvenile was taking caterpillars on the ground.


“Of the 2 parents that I saw (below), one took a centipede as prey for the young. Most prey was taken on the ground.

He is Patron of the Singapore Gardening Society and was appointed Honorary Museum Associate of the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum (LKCNHM) in 2012. In 2005, Dr Wee started the Bird Ecology Study Group. With more than 6,000 entries, the website has become a valuable resource consulted by students, birdwatchers and researchers locally and internationally.
