Ant(tics) of the pesky Javan mynah

on 20th December 2023

I chanced upon a Javan mynah (Acridotheres javanicus) behaving in a peculiar manner. The common forager was pecking at fire ants and depositing them amongst its feathers. The agitated ants secrete formic acid and rid the feathers of parasites. So the birdie antics was not play but a form of therapy.

Video 1: The Javan mynah picked up fire ants and placed them on its feathers. It repeated the process many times, contorting its body so that the ants could clean its feathers in hard to reach locations. The video has been slowed down (from 0:20 onwards) so that viewers can appreciate the bird’s thoroughness. 19 December 2023.
