Yellow-eared Spiderhunter – new food source

posted in: birds, Feeding-plants | 0

I saw a Yellow-eared Spiderhunter (Arachnothera chrysogenys chrysogenys) feeding on the fruit of the Macaranga gigantea (Giant Mahang) this morning.

This is not unexpected as I have observed Grey-breasted Spiderhunter (Arachnothera modesta) feeding on this fruit (Macaranga gigantea) and observed the Yellow-eared Spiderhunter feeding frequently on the Macaranga bancana fruit.

In the past I have also observed them feeding on Nephelium lappaceum (Rambutan fruit) that was opened by hanging parrots.

I have also seen them searching the foliage for insect prey.
