Monitor Lizard–Otter tug-of-war

Video grab.

On 23rd August at about 9:15 am, Kumchun Chan encountered a Smooth Otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) tugging the tail of a Malayan Water Monitor (Varanus salvator). Both were in the water. As the latter reached land it got its tail free (above, below).

The spread of the Smooth Otter in Singapore LINK has seen an increase in its confrontation with the Malayan Water Monitor.

Otters, especially the pups are tempting food for the larger lizards. However, the otters move in big family groups and the adults are fierce and attack the lizards when their pups are threatened LINK.

One to one, a large lizard may overcome an adult otter. But not when there are other otters around LINK.
