A family of two adults and two juveniles Red-whiskered Bulbuls (Pycnonotus jocosus) was caught on video feeding on a hanging feeder in India. The juveniles can be recognised by the absence of the red ear patches that are present in the adults.
The absence of yellow oral flanges that indicate a newly fledged juvenile show that the juveniles are somewhat capable of looking after themselves. This is confirmed by the juveniles picking up food from the feeder most of the time.
Yet, they occasionally beg by gaping their mandibles and the adults oblige by offering them food. Furthermore, the adults occasionally offer them bits of food without them begging for it that the juveniles happily accept.
