Call of the Barred Eagle-owl

on 2nd November 2018

“I photographed an adult Barred Eagle-owl (Bubo sumatranus) aka Malay Eagle Owl, on 21st October 2018 near the Singapore Quarry area at 6.00pm (below). It was asleep most of the time but became more active when it was approaching 7pm.

“At about 6.30pm, a Greater racket-tailed drongo (Dicrurus paradiseus) was heard calling loudly for a few minutes. It seemed like it was mobbing the eagle-owl but the latter was not bothered by the noise. Surprisingly the drongo perched very close to the eagle-owl (below), but the owl did not react at all. After a few minutes, the drongo quietly flew off.

“I was fortunate to hear the owl calling for a brief period before it became very dark (see video clip below).

“I do apologise for the poor quality images as the subject was far away and the light was dim.”
