Banded Bay Cuckoo – calls

“These calls have been very common these past few weeks and I considered the Banded Bay Cuckoo (Cacomantis sonneratii sonneratii). I am grateful to Connie Khoo, who has vast experienced in cuckoos, for helping to confirm the identity of the calls.

“I have previously posted similar calls from this species including mimicry of Iora calls (common brood host). These particular calls I am posting are described a “pi-pi-piu-piu” (Erritzøe, Mann, Brammer and Fuller, Cuckoos of the World, 2012) (above).

“Connie is of the opinion that these may be courtship calls. I managed one image of the bird in a thicket (top). Sonogram and waveform above.
