“Asian Openbills (Anastomus oscitans) have become common in recent at wetland sites and there is more to learn about them.
“Large flocks seen feeding predominantly on the Golden Apple Snail (Pomacea canaliculata) – look at the feet in the image above for snail volume; although they feed on other prey as well.
“A sizeable number had grey-brown plumage, immatures in transition from juvenile to adult plumage (above, below).
“They are expert flies, usually high up, but when travelling over water between land destinations can be very low over the water (see composite below).”
