Oriental Pied Hornbill’s fledging moment

Ted Ng’s video of the Oriental Pied Hornbill (Anthracoceros albirostris) fledging moment was documented at around 5.21 pm on 3rd February 2017. By then the chick had been confined inside the nesting cavity for more than 40 days since it hatched from the egg LINK.

The adult female broke the seal when the time was right for the chick to fledge. The video shows the anxious chick squeezing out of the broken seal to face the world. The video complements GaoJian LiuJia’s images that show the stages of flight from the nest LINK.
