Eurasian Tree Sparrow eating grass seeds

“While waiting for our car at the workshop this morning my wife and I observed a small flock of Eurasian Tree Sparrows (Passer montanus malaccensis) feeding on the Axonopus compressus (carpet grass, savanna grass) *fruit (seeds?) (below).

*Note: The fruits of grasses are one-seeded where the ovary wall is fused with the seed coat. Technically it is called caryopsis.
