Common Flameback anting using tree sap

“On 18th September 2016, I was able to record on video, the female Common Flameback (Dinopium javanense) woodpecker performing anting at Pasir Ris Park, mangrove boardwalk.

“Thanks to Lena Chow’s article HERE by the same species of bird, I was able to recognise this behavior. Otherwise, I would have casually walked away and missed this opportunity to observe and video this behavior.

“Video 1 below shows the bird applying the sap on its rump, base of the neck and belly.

“Video 2 below shows the bird applying the sap beneath its wings.

“I am not able to identify the tree but in the video, it shows its reddish bark.”

He is Patron of the Singapore Gardening Society and was appointed Honorary Museum Associate of the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum (LKCNHM) in 2012. In 2005, Dr Wee started the Bird Ecology Study Group. With more than 6,000 entries, the website has become a valuable resource consulted by students, birdwatchers and researchers locally and internationally.
