“On a scorching afternoon in July 2016, one would imagine that any bird in its right frame of mind would seek cool relief amongst the shade of trees. However, before my squinting eyes were a handful of Grey Herons (Ardea cinerea) sunning themselves along the sizzling, sandy beach (above, below).
“Their behaviour reminded me of beach-loving Europeans in summer, as they systematically sun their anterior and posterior in order to get an even tan.
