What better time than Singapore’s 50th year to reflect on our natural heritage? Come 21 Mar 2015, Nature Society (Singapore) or NSS plans to do just that! The National Butterfly campaign will be launched to make the public more aware of the importance of butterflies to the well being of our environment and the need to protect them and their forest habitat where most butterflies live. They will also be educated on current losses and threats to butterflies of Singapore.
The main component to the campaign will be the vote to select our National Butterfly. Singaporeans and Permanent Residents will be given the opportunity to choose their National Butterfly – one which best represents the spirit of Singapore! Six species have been shortlisted by a panel of experts for the public to vote on.
We perceive that the National Butterfly will be an ICON for butterflies of Singapore. It will also serve as a voice for other lesser studied but important insects like bees and beetles that share the same habitat and contribute towards our environment.
The main vehicle for the campaign will be the website www.nationalbutterfly.org.sg which will go live closer to the launch. There will be a voting section which will provide the selection criteria for the National Butterfly, a photo display of the six butterfly nominees along with educational information on our butterflies.
The vote will be launched on 21 March 2015 at the Public Utilities Board (PUB)’s ‘World Water Week’ celebrations at the Sports Hub in Kallang. NSS welcomes this alignment with the PUB as it recognises the importance of water to man and all living things. The voting period for the National Butterfly will be from 21 March to 30 April, 2015.
So don’t forget to vote and encourage all your family members, friends and colleagues to visit the National Butterfly website to cast their votes! Tell them that a vote for our National Butterfly is a vote for a better environment and life! Voters of the winning butterfly are eligible for a LUCKY DRAW and stand to win an exciting mystery prize!
To publicise this campaign, NSS will be distributing posters and standees to be displayed at places where adults, youths and children can be reached. There will also be a briefing on 2nd April from 2:30-4:30pm for Green Group leaders, student ambassadors and invited representatives where one could learn more about the campaign, participate and help publicize the vote. See TIMELINE at the end of document.
If you or your organization would like to receive a copy of the posters and standees or attend the briefing, please contact Nature Society (Singapore) at 6741-2036 or email@example.com. Also visit us HERE.
