Video clip of the White-throated Kingfisher’s call

on 3rd March 2014

Lena Chow sent in the video above to add visuals to an earlier account of the less common call of the White-throated Kingfisher (Halcyon smyrnensis) by Dato’ Dr Amar-Singh HSS LINK.

The kingfisher in the clip was perching on a television aerial on Lena’s neighbour’s rooftop, whinnying incessantly for at least 5 minutes.

  1. Hi Lena,

This back lighting shot makes the bill of the bird to appear black.
The call of the bird sounds like a seeking call for attention of its mate. I hear adults with bright red bills calling similarly near my river side house especially during breeding season.

Parenting call for their young do sound quite similar but usually parent has a catch in its bill.

    Hope this extra info.helps.

    Cheers,

    daisy
