Ficus consociata: 3. Gold-whiskered Barbet

on 25th July 2012

Earlier posts on birds feeding on Ficus consociata can be viewed at these links: 1 and 2.

“There were at least three different Gold-whiskered Barbets (Megalaima chrysopogon laeta) who came to feed on this Ficus consociata in the span of an hour. They came and went together and may be a family group. They had no difficulty plucking, crushing and swallowing whole the 1.5 cm diameter figs.

“The above-left image shows the heads of all three. I think the one at the top is immature, the lores were still a little orange and plumage not as bright. The other two are adults but the one at the bottom was better groomed… The other image (above right) is of a mature adult showing the pale grey-buff neck bordered by a faint blue necklace.”
