Lineated Barbet calling

posted in: Vocalisation | 0

“Lineated Barbets (Megalaima lineata hodgsoni) are common in our area and daily visitors to our home. This post shows one calling… Note that the beak is not open while calling but the throat bulges out, exposing the skin below (above left).

“Although said to call from cover, I have often seen it call from the top of a tree in our garden and elsewhere. I have posted audio recordings of the two common calls before LINK, but some comments about them:

1. The first I would render as “wu-kock” – the common call and uttered repeatedly on end
2. The second is a 4 note call I would render as “wu-wu-wu-wtup – more bunched up and faster rate.

“A waveform record of them attached in order (above right).”
