Altitudinal migration: Eurasian Tree Sparrow

Dato’ Dr Amar-Singh HSS photographed an immature Eurasian Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus malaccensis) at ASL1600 in Malaysia’s Cameron Highlands, Malaysia on 14th June 2011.

This is a common lowland species of urban areas and open country. The presence of an immature indicates that it is breeding in the highlands. “As the highlands get destroyed and temperatures rise, see more of these at higher vantage points breeding and extending.”

This is definitely a result of climate change – induced through decades of deforestation in these highlands.
