A family of Blue-throated Bee-eaters

on 6th August 2011

“Two species of Bee-eaters are found in my neighbourhood in recent years, the Blue-tailed (Merops philippinus) and the Blue-throated (Merops viridis). The Blue-tailed species was last seen on 8th March 2011, while for this season I started to see the Blue-throated on 6th June 2011. It appeared that there is quite a number of them here as well as in the nearby Bishan Park, as their characteristic calls filled the air at dusk.

“On the evening of 12th June 2011, I was fortunate to observe the feeding behaviour of a Blue-throated Bee-eaters with 2 juveniles. Although the 2 juniors were already able to catch preys by themselves, the adult would still pass it’s own catch to them occasionally.”
