Brown Hawk Owl calling

on 21st September 2010

“Managed to make a video clip of the Brown Hawk Owl (Ninox scutulata) calling in the middle of the Singapore’s Central Catchment Area. It looks like when it is making the call the bill is not opened, only the throat pouch is expanded and contracted when the call ends. However I did observed on some other occasion on another bird, the bill was slightly opened.

“Brown Boobooks can be found from Indian sub-continent to SW China, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. So it is quite a common owl.

“The old name of this owl is Brown Hawk Owl.”

  1. now have to be aware, the migratory race is now split as Northern Boobook, IDying this two maybe superbly challenging as they are seemingly mainly differentiated by the differences in the brown tone.

  2. Yes, when in the migratory season, we seem to get more Brown Boobooks in our forest in Singapore. I was told that the migrants are bigger than the ones residing. Well have to keep a look out and see if we can spot any differences in the birds in the coming season.

  3. according to Susan Myer’s Birds of Borneo, the northern species is paler, the pattern on the belly may be slightly different but as far as I’m concern, quite cant tell that. The best way is by call, which should be significantly distinct, one of the major way to examine the species of owls nowadays.
