Stork-billed Kingfisher fishing

“I was at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve on Friday evening (around 6pm) and saw the Stork-billed Kingfisher (Halcyon capensis) dived three times in less than 5 minutes before it managed to catch a fish. All the while my impression is that the kingfisher is a very efficient fish hunter and I didn’t expect the success rate is just 33% which I think is rather low.

“I managed to capture a photo that show the fish jump up above water surface just to avoid being caught by the kingfisher (above left).

“Either this kingfisher is too slow or the fish getting smarter.”
