Yellow-vented Bulbul and bananas

Most birdwatchers are simply blind to Yellow-vented Bulbuls (Pycnonotus goiavier analis), so common are they. Not to Dato’ Dr Amar-Singh HSS, even when he was at the Kledang-Sayong Forest Reserve in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia, where there are many other interesting birds to observe.

“Saw a pair of hungry Yellow-vented Bulbuls taking the opportunity to “wallop” some ripe bananas in the drizzle and overcast skies. They initially pecked one end to open the fruit, then knew how to peel back some pieces of skin before taking mouthfuls,” observes Amar.
