“Was woken early this morning around 6.30am when I heard something jumping onto one of my aviaries. Thought it was the neighbour’s cat trying to get our birds again. When out to check but before I got to the aviary, I heard the flapping of large wings but didn’t manage to see anything.

“Later in the same morning, my neighbour from two houses away called me to come and see this large owl that was perched on their Norfolk Island Pine in their garden. Turn out to be this very beautiful Spotted Wood Owl (Strix seloputo). It must have been this fellow that I heard earlier in the morning trying to get an easy meal.

“We have seen and heard the calls of Collared Scops Owl (Otus bakkamoena) frequently in our estate but this is the first time seeing the Spotted Wood Owl here. Certainly made our day.”
